Electric Actuator Wiring & Commissioning Guide: Safety Requirements, 7-Brand Comparison & Fault Quick Reference
source:    date:2026-09-29

Electric actuators are key terminal devices in thermal power plant control systems, driving control and on-off valves. Brands differ significantly in terminal wiring, stroke commissioning and fault handling, yet the core workflow is highly consistent. This guide compiles the universal safety requirements and cable selection for electric actuator wiring, a commissioning comparison of seven mainstream brands (Rotork IQ, SIPOS 5/7, Limitorque MX/QX, AUMA SA/SAR, RAGA RA/RJ/RQM, SAI AI/MI, Xingli LT/LTQ), the universal commissioning workflow and precautions, and a common-fault quick reference. Brand-specific wiring and commissioning guides are linked at the end.

Safety Requirements and Universal Wiring Principles

⚠️ Observe the following before any wiring or commissioning:

  • De-energize both the main power and control power; verify absence of voltage before working
  • Run power and signal cables in separate conduits to avoid electromagnetic interference
  • Ground reliably; earthing resistance must not exceed 4 Ω
  • Three-phase phase sequence must match the actuator nameplate; otherwise swap any two phases
  • Before commissioning, operate the handwheel manually to confirm the valve is free of sticking

Cable selection:

Cable typeSpecificationDescription
Power cable3×1.5–3×4.0 mm²Sized to motor power; 380V three-phase or 220V single-phase
Control cable0.75–1.5 mm²Digital/interlock signals; shielded cable
Analog cable1.0 mm² twisted pair, shielded4–20 mA command and feedback; run in its own conduit
Earthing cable≥2.5 mm² green-yellowProtective earth, reliably bonded to the enclosure

Universal Commissioning Workflow (All Brands)

  • Wiring check: with power off, verify every terminal against the wiring diagram and measure insulation resistance
  • Manual pre-positioning: use the handwheel to place the valve around 50%
  • Phase-sequence check: after energizing, switch to local mode and jog to confirm rotation direction
  • Close-limit setting: drive the valve fully closed and save the close limit in the brand menu
  • Open-limit setting: drive the valve fully open and save the open limit
  • Torque setting: set open/close torque (typically 40%–60% of rated)
  • Seating mode: close direction usually torque-seated (tight closure); open direction travel-seated (prevents overshoot)
  • Feedback calibration: adjust feedback to 4 mA fully closed and 20 mA fully open
  • Full-stroke verification: stroke 2–3 times locally; confirm limits and feedback
  • Remote loop test: switch to remote and verify commands from the DCS/PLC
  • Safety functions: verify ESD, interlocks and other protections
  • Records: archive commissioning parameters and test results in the equipment file

Commissioning Precautions

  • Close before open: always set the close limit first, then the open limit
  • Do not over-torque: excessive torque can damage the valve stem or internal gearing; generally keep within 120% of rated
  • No torque seating on opening: most brands forbid torque-seated opening to avoid incomplete opening
  • Power-fail retention: modern actuators retain parameters through power loss, but record key settings after commissioning anyway
  • Keep mechanical margin: electrical limits must act before mechanical limits, leaving 2°–5° of margin
  • Lock after setting: after commissioning, tighten limit cams and torque-switch screws against loosening
  • Shield earthing: earth the shield of 4–20 mA analog cables at one end only, to prevent interference
  • Ingress protection: after wiring, tighten the cable glands so the IP rating is not degraded
