Rotork IQ Series Electric Actuator: Terminal Wiring, Infrared Setter Commissioning & Troubleshooting
source:    date:2026-09-29

The Rotork IQ series is a widely used non-intrusive smart electric actuator with IP68 protection. Commissioning is done via an infrared setter — no need to open the electrical compartment. Based on the IQ actuator manual (Publication E120C), this article covers terminal wiring for the on-off and modulating versions, travel/torque limit setting, and common fault remedies.

On-Off Type Terminal Wiring

TerminalFunctionDescription
1、2、3Three-phase supply L1、L2、L3380VAC, phase order irrelevant
EEarth terminalProtective earth, must be reliably connected
4(-)、5(+)24V DC control powerInternal regulated output for external control circuits
5、33Close command input (CLOSE)Remote close signal, to DCS/PLC DO card
5、34Remote stop/holdRemote stop signal
5、35Open command input (OPEN)Remote open signal, to DCS/PLC DO card
6、7Valve fully-closed feedbackPassive closed-limit contact, to DCS/PLC DI card
8、9Valve fully-open feedbackPassive open-limit contact, to DCS/PLC DI card
42、43Fault feedbackFault signal
10、11Remote-control signalRemote signal

Wiring notes: for on-off valves, jumper internal supply 4 to 36; jumper 5 to 34 for pulse signals, no jumper for maintained signals.

Modulating Type Terminal Wiring

TerminalFunctionDescription
1、2、3Three-phase supply L1、L2、L3380VAC, automatic phase recognition
EEarth terminalProtective earth, must be reliably connected
26Analog command input +Remote control signal, to DCS/PLC AO card
27Analog command input -Remote control signal, to DCS/PLC AO card
22Analog position feedback +Analog position feedback, to DCS/PLC AI card
23Analog position feedback -Analog position feedback, to DCS/PLC AI card

Wiring notes: for modulating valves, jumper 4 to 41 and 5 to 39.

Commissioning Procedure

Step 1: Pre-commissioning checks

  • Verify nameplate data: voltage (380V three-phase), protection rating (IP68), output torque
  • Check wiring: phase sequence, control signals, feedback signals, earth
  • Operate the handwheel to mid-position (about 50% opening)

Step 2: Travel limit setting with the infrared setter

  • Aim the infrared setter at the display window and press ↓ to enter the setting menu
  • Navigate to "LC" (close limit) and press ENTER to save the close limit
  • Drive the valve fully open (manually or electrically), find "LO" (open limit) and press ENTER to save
  • The actuator records the total turns and shows a confirmation on the display

Step 3: Torque limit setting

  • Select "TORQUE" in the setting menu
  • Set open and close torque values (as a percentage of rated torque)
  • Close direction is normally torque seated, ensuring tight closure
  • Open direction is normally travel seated, preventing overshoot

Step 4: Functional verification

  • Stroke the actuator fully twice locally; confirm open/close limit action
  • Switch to remote and verify control commands from the DCS
  • Check that full open/close positions match the actual valve positions; 4–20 mA position feedback reads 4 mA fully closed and 20 mA fully open

Common Faults and Remedies

FaultPossible causeRemedy
Actuator does not movePhase loss; ESD not reset; interlock not satisfiedCheck three-phase supply; reset ESD; check interlock circuit
Will not close / not tightClose torque set too low; valve stickingIncrease torque appropriately; check valve mechanically
Thermal tripMotor overload; high ambient temperatureCheck torque setting; improve ventilation
Feedback deviationPotentiometer or encoder position shiftedRe-set travel limits and recalibrate 4–20 mA output
