OnTrac Electric Actuators: A Brand Originating from ABB — History, Multitrac Platform and Certifications

source:original    date:2026-10-07

OnTrac is an international electric actuator brand originating from ABB's actuator technology line: the business traces its roots to Hartmann & Braun, which was acquired by ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) in 1999; in 2000 ABB launched both the Contrac and Ontrac product ranges; and in 2011 ABB Automation Product GmbH completed the transfer of its advanced actuator technology and the Ontrac electric actuator product line to the now-independent OnTrac company. Today OnTrac is headquartered in Irvine, California, USA, with sales offices in Rotterdam (Europe), Raleigh (North America) and Shanghai (Asia Pacific). The portfolio consists of four building blocks: Multitrac (modular multi-turn / part-turn / linear platform), Easytrac (compact part-turn), Smartrac (PC-based setup software) and Cloudtrac (QR-code cloud service). Key figures: multi-turn base torque 6-1000 Nm (up to 8,100 Nm with PG/PGZ gearboxes), part-turn up to 500,000 Nm with the ASNG gearbox, linear thrust 11-185 kN, plus TÜV SIL2/SIL3, multi-standard IP68 and an ATEX CT4 version of Easytrac.

1. Brand history

TimeEvent
OriginThe story starts at Hartmann & Braun, a successful actuation company
1999Hartmann & Braun acquired by ABB (Asea Brown Boveri)
2000ABB launches the Contrac and Ontrac product ranges
2011ABB Automation Product GmbH completes the transfer of its advanced actuator technology and Ontrac product line; OnTrac becomes an independent company
TodayAn international supplier of high-specification electric actuators for the whole market

Note on brand identity: OnTrac originates from ABB's actuator technology line but has been an independent company since 2011 — sources often label it "ABB electric actuators"; the accurate description is "OnTrac, originating from ABB".

2. Company footprint and industries

Headquarters: Irvine, California, USA. Sales offices: Rotterdam, the Netherlands (Europe); Raleigh, North Carolina, USA (North America); Shanghai, China (Asia Pacific). Industries served per the official site: water & wastewater, power generation, cement, iron & steel, chemicals, oil & gas, and life sciences.

3. Portfolio: two hardware platforms plus two digital tools

All products are available in On/Off and Modulating versions; options across the range include IP68 ingress protection, explosion-proof certification, cloud connectivity, remote electronics and serial protocols. Every actuator can be connected to both Smartrac and Ontrac Cloud.

4. Multitrac: the modular workhorse

Multitrac is offered in multi-turn, part-turn and linear versions across a large torque and thrust range. Non-intrusive setup (control knob or IR input) and a variable-speed output drive are standard. Position sensing uses a proven contactless Hall sensor (absolute control optional). Options include explosion-proof certification, an additional programmable switchpac, a split control head and programmable limit switches.

Multi-turn

  • MME (Multitrac Modulating Electric): S4 modulating control, the 800 range;
  • MOE (Multitrac On/Off Electric): S2 on/off control, the 700 range;
  • Base torque 6-1000 Nm; with the modular design and an added PG/PGZ gearbox, multi-turn torque increases up to 8,100 Nm;
  • Model lineup: MME806/808/812/825/850/890 (modulating), MOE706/708/712/725/750/790/790L (on/off) — torque/time/power per model can be found in the official datasheets in our documentation library.

Part-turn

Multi-turn base + ASNG part-turn gearbox: a torque range of up to 500,000 Nm (approx. 368,750 ft-lb) covering high-torque on/off and modulating duties on ball valves, butterfly valves and dampers.

Linear

Multi-turn base + Linear Adapter Unit: a thrust range of 11-185 kN for both on/off and modulating control — an extensive range of control-valve capabilities.

5. Certification

  • Functional safety: TÜV SIL2 & SIL3 certificates (both Multitrac and Easytrac tested);
  • Ingress protection: IP68 compliance tested to UL 50E, ANSI/NEMA 250, CSA C22.2 No.94.2, IEC 60529 and IEC 60034-5;
  • Hazardous areas: ATEX CT4-certified Easytrac version;
  • Compliance: CE (LVD/MD/EMC), TÜV RoHS and REACH; UL low-temperature, noise and vibration compliance tests.

Summary

  • History in one line: Hartmann & Braun → into ABB in 1999 → Ontrac launched in 2000 → independent since 2011 — "originating from ABB", not a current ABB brand;
  • One modular base, three outputs: the 6-1000 Nm multi-turn base scales to 8,100 Nm with a PG/PGZ gearbox, to 500,000 Nm part-turn with an ASNG gearbox, and to 185 kN thrust with the linear adapter unit;
  • The digital ecosystem is the differentiator: contactless Hall position sensing, non-intrusive setup, Smartrac software plus Cloudtrac QR service — lifetime access to each actuator's own documentation.
