Re-Positioning Rotork Electric Dampers: Bluetooth Setting Tool, Limits Menu and Field Records

source:original    date:2026-10-15

Rotork electric regulating dampers must have their stroke re-positioned whenever command and feedback diverge or after the valve body has been overhauled — one of the most frequent actuator jobs in power-plant maintenance. This article compiles a maintenance engineer's field procedure: using the Rotork Bluetooth setting tool to re-position IQ-series regulating dampers (main-menu password ROTORK → Settings → Limits, setting direction, seating method, torque value, then Set Limit), plus one analogue setting and three positioning-quality parameters (deadband / hysteresis / inhibit time). A record of the actual parameters of five Rotork dampers on a plant's Unit 1 boiler is included. All steps and values are reproduced from the field record.

Switching the damper to LOCAL and entering via the Bluetooth setting tool

Turn the damper selector to LOCAL first, then aim the setting tool at the display and press "down" to connect (field photo)

1. When re-positioning is needed

The plant's Rotork electric regulating dampers serve forced-damper fan blade control, induced-damper fan blade control, primary-air fan blade control and the main feedwater bypass damper. Re-positioning is required when:

  • command and feedback disagree;
  • the valve body has been overhauled by the mechanical crew (the mechanical datum may have shifted).

Positioning must be done jointly with the mechanical crew to confirm the true valve position, so the electronic position never detaches from the mechanical reality.

2. The positioning procedure

Procedure with the Bluetooth setting tool:

  1. Turn the damper selector to LOCAL;
  2. Aim the setting tool at the display and press "down" — the blue LED at the lower left of the display confirms the Bluetooth connection;
  3. Enter the main menu (password: ROTORK);
  4. Select Settings → the first item Limits: Close Limit on top, Open Limit below;
  5. Item 1, Direction: Clockwise / Anti-clockwise;
  6. Item 2, Action: limit-seated or torque-seated (open/close);
  7. Item 3, Torque: the torque value — inoperative if Action is set to limit seating;
  8. Item 4, Set Limit: press OK, then move the damper manually to the required limit position, and confirm with "OK";
  9. Exercise the damper manually a few times, return the selector to REMOTE, and trial-operate from the control room.

3. Other key settings

  • Analogue – Invert: default off — 4mA = fully closed, 20mA = fully open; switching it on reverses the mapping;
  • Control – Remote – Positioning, three positioning-quality parameters:
    • Deadband: smaller is more precise, but too small causes hunting;
    • Hysteresis: must be larger than the deadband;
    • Inhibit Time: the damping time.

4. Field parameter record (five Rotork dampers, Unit 1 boiler)

Table 1 Recorded positioning parameters, Unit 1 boiler Rotork dampers

DamperSeatingDirectionDeadbandHysteresisInhibit time
Main feedwater bypassLimitClockwise1%2%2s
Primary-air fan blade damperLimitAnti-clockwise1%2%0s
Forced-damper fan blade damperLimitClockwise1%2%0s
Induced-damper fan blade damper ALimitAnti-clockwise1%2%0s
Induced-damper fan blade damper BLimitClockwise1%2%0s

Two patterns emerge from the field record: all dampers are limit-seated (stroke precision takes priority over torque seating for regulating dampers), and rotation varies with valve installation — clockwise and anti-clockwise coexist, so every damper's rotation must be confirmed on site before positioning, never copied from memory. The main feedwater bypass damper alone carries a 2s inhibit time, consistent with its stricter requirement for smooth level control.

Summary

  • Procedure in one line: LOCAL → Bluetooth (blue LED) → password ROTORK → Settings → Limits → direction/seating/torque → Set Limit to position, OK → manual test → remote trial;
  • Two principles: with limit seating the torque item is inoperative; keep the deadband small but hunt-free, with hysteresis larger than the deadband;
  • Keep a parameter ledger: record rotation/deadband/hysteresis/inhibit time after each positioning for fast recovery at the next overhaul or part replacement.
