Smart Valve Positioners: Universal Commissioning Workflow & Cross-Brand Troubleshooting (Siemens / Fisher / ABB)
Smart valve positioners are the core accessory of control valves: they take the 4–20 mA control signal to position the valve accurately while providing position feedback and diagnostics. This article summarizes four smart positioners commonly used in thermal power plants — Siemens SIPART PS2, Fisher DVC2000, Fisher DVC6200 and ABB TZID-C — with a specification comparison, a universal nine-step commissioning workflow and a cross-brand quick troubleshooting table. For brand-specific wiring and initialization, see the related articles at the end.

Universal Commissioning Workflow
- Installation check: positioner and actuator firmly mounted, feedback lever correctly connected, no air-piping leaks
- Air preparation: purge the piping before admitting air; verify regulator outlet pressure meets the actuator nameplate
- Electrical wiring: wire per the terminal diagram; verify signal polarity, grounding and feedback output connections
- Power-up check: apply the 4–20 mA signal; confirm normal display with no alarms
- Parameter setup: set basic parameters for valve action (air-to-open/close) and actuator type (linear/part-turn)
- Auto calibration: run the auto-initialization/auto-calibration/auto-adjust program and wait for completion
- Tuning: if the valve oscillates or is unstable, adjust tuning parameters (gain/PID/dead band)
- Verification: apply different signals; check accurate stable positioning and correct feedback
- Save and exit: store all parameters and return to normal operation mode
