The Siemens SIPART PS2 is one of the most widely used smart electro-pneumatic valve positioners in thermal power, petrochemical and metallurgical plants. Controlling the pneumatic actuator through piezo valves, it offers extremely low air consumption, high control accuracy and non-contact position detection, supports the HART protocol, and allows remote configuration and diagnostics. This article compiles the PS2's main specifications, two-wire wiring, the complete initialization/commissioning procedure for linear and part-turn actuators, and field troubleshooting of common faults.
The SIPART PS2 uses two-wire wiring: the working power is taken from the 4–20 mA input loop, so no separate supply is needed. Terminals are located in the connection box at the bottom of the housing:
| Terminal | Function | Description |
|---|---|---|
| + | Signal plus | 4–20 mA DC input positive |
| - | Signal minus | 4–20 mA DC input negative |
| ⏚ | Ground | Enclosure ground; reliable grounding required |
Note: terminal voltage is about 9 V DC — never apply 24 V DC directly to the positioner terminals. HART communication is superimposed on the 4–20 mA loop and accessed via the HART connector.
If modified parameters prevent initialization, restore factory settings: go to parameter 51 (PRST) and hold "+" for 5 s; a restore symbol confirms success.
| Fault | Possible cause | Remedy |
|---|---|---|
| ERROR during RUN1 | Instrument air pressure too low; feedback parts loose; air piping reversed | Check supply pressure (4–5 bar); tighten feedback parts; correct piping |
| Fault during RUN2 | Sliding clamp adjustment wheel badly positioned | Turn the wheel until code "0" appears and the P opening is 5–10; return to parameter 4 and reinitialize |
| "MIDDL" displayed | Valve not at mid-stroke | Drive the actuator to mid-stroke with the appropriate key; return to parameter 4 and reinitialize |
| "RANGE" displayed | Selected end position outside permitted measuring range | Drive to the other end position, or adjust the sliding clamp |
| Large control deviation | Compressed-air fault; actuator fault; blocked valve | Check air supply, actuator; clean the valve |
| Dead-band limit exceeded | Increased packing friction; mechanical play in feedback | Check packing; eliminate mechanical play |
| Pneumatic leak limit exceeded | Leak in the air circuit | Check circuit tightness |
| Static-friction limit exceeded | Valve sticking, not moving smoothly | Check valve lubrication and packing |
| Temperature fault | Ambient temperature too low/high | Check ambient conditions |
