Standards for Valve Electric Actuators: A Guide to the JB/T and GB System

source:    date:2026-10-01

JB/T 8528-1997 Technical conditions for general valve electric actuators — The latest standard for valve electric actuators, effective 1998-01-01, revising ZBJ 16002-87. Drawing on recent design, testing, inspection and service practice, it revises ambient temperature, noise, starting torque, maximum torque, control torque, control speed and their test methods, replacing ZBJ 16002-87. Our company was a principal drafter.

GB 12222-89 Multi-turn valve actuating device connections — Equivalent to ISO 5210/1–5210/3-1982; specifies connection and drive-member dimensions plus reference torque and axial thrust for multi-turn actuators on gate, globe, throttle and diaphragm valves. International makers' connection dimensions follow this standard; our SMC, SCD and BA products comply.

GB 12223-89 Part-turn valve actuating device connections — Equivalent to ISO 5211/1–5211/3-1982; specifies connection and drive dimensions and reference torque for part-turn actuators on ball, butterfly and plug valves. Our HBC series differs from it, but SMC/HBC part-turn products to this standard can be supplied on request, as can SMC/JA connections.

JB/T 8862-2000 Life test procedures for valve electric actuators — Test requirements, items and methods for life testing; type-test life tests still follow it. JBZ 247-85 is one of the referenced standards of JB/T 8528-1997.

JB/TQ 53168-99 Quality grading of multi-turn actuators — Quality grades, test and sampling-assessment methods; sets indices for torque repeatability, life test, noise; grades qualified, first-class and top-class products.

JB 2195-77 YDF series three-phase motors for motorised valves — China's first standard for dedicated valve motors, covering technical requirements, connection parameters and acceptance rules. The Limitorque motors used in our SMC series exceed YDF parameters (SMC does not use YDF motors); the standard has since been revised upwards with reference to Limitorque figures. Still useful for understanding dedicated valve motors.

GB 3836.1-2000 General requirements for explosion-protected electrical equipment and GB 3836.2-2000 Flameproof enclosure "d" — Mandatory standards for Ex design, manufacture, inspection and testing. As valve actuators are flameproof type, GB 3836.2-2000 applies. Our SMC Ex products were designed, made and certified to these two standards by the state-designated Ex certification body.

JB/T 8529-1997 Technical conditions for flameproof valve actuators — Flameproof actuators are among the more complex Ex equipment with specific structural features; this industry standard regulates their design, technical requirements, test methods and inspection rules. Our company drafted it.

JB/T 8530-1997 Model designation for valve electric actuators — How actuator model numbers are formed.

Related standards: GB 4208-93 IP codes; GB/T 4942.2-93 enclosure protection for low-voltage apparatus; GB/T 2423.4-93 damp-heat cyclic test Db; JB 2196-1997 YBDF-WF outdoor/corrosion-proof/flameproof valve motors; GB 3797-89 electric control equipment part 2; GB 3181-95 paint film colour standards.

Summary: This article lists standards commonly met in actuator design and testing, mainly specialised ones. Some are omitted for lack of a national/industry number (e.g. nuclear-class and marine actuator conditions); some listed are under revision or redrafting — standards naturally evolve. Standards constrain a product's technical level, so knowing them alongside the construction principles is very worthwhile.
